Top 10 Survival Items What You Need In a Survival Kit

#1 Water Filter

Having access to clean and safe drinking water is ultimately the one factor that determines whether or not you survive an emergency. Just take a second and think about it. After all, humans can survive without food for an extended amount of time. But, humans can develop a series of health complications if they don’t have access to clean or safe drinking water.

That being said, it’s important to have a water filter in your survival kit. Water filters are generally small and portable. This is good because you won’t have to worry about it taking up a ton of space in your survival kit.

Basically, all you need to do is run whatever water you find through your water filter, and the water should become safe to drink. If you really want to be extra cautious, consider purchasing and using water purification tablets.

#2 Containers to Store Food & Water

The importance of having clean and safe drinking water is what brings us to the next item you need in order to survive. Well, in this case it should be multiple items.

If you have access to food and water, which you should especially during the initial days when disaster strikes, then you should have durable containers to store them in. A statement container you should have is a water bottle. Metal water bottles are the best type of water bottles because they keep water cooled or warmed for an extended amount of time.

You should also have at least little bags or portable plastic containers to store any food you cook, such as fish. This will help ensure your food stays fresh and secured from any animals or inclement weather.

#3 Survival Tent

Whether you plan on using your survival kit for your home or for a hiking trip, it’s especially important that you keep a good survival tent in it. You never know when you might need some temporary shelter. While there’s always the possibility that you can build your own shelter, you don’t want to bank on that option.

That’s why it’s important to have a tent that can fit at least one person. Keep in mind that this tent should be easily portable, and preferably easy to set up.

#4 Firearm

Despite common belief, firearms are considered survival gear. Firearms can be useful in a variety of situations. Of course, if someone attempts to harm you or your loved ones during a disaster, you can use your firearm to scare or fend them off.

Aside from protecting yourself and your loved ones, keeping a firearm in your survival kit is also beneficial because you could potentially use it to kill animals to use for food or fur. While none of these situations are ideal, it’s important to consider that they can potentially happen.

#5 Pepper Spray

If you’re uncomfortable about carrying a firearm with you, or don’t have the option to for whatever reason, pepper spray is another self defense weapon that’s phenomenal to keep in survival kits. It’s so great that you should keep it in your kit even if you have a firearm.

Pepper spray can be useful in a variety of situations, but it will most likely come in handy if someone or a rabid animal attempts to attack you or your family. With a simple click of a button, you will be able to spray high-grade pepper in their face, which will deter them from attacking you or someone else.

Pepper spray is a great self defense weapon to have because it’s easily accessible and rather cheap. So, there’s no excuse why you shouldn’t have it.

#6 Fire Starter/Lighter

Like many of the items on this list, lighters are beneficial for a variety of reasons. For example, if you need a small light to see something, you can easily ignite your lighter. On the other hand, if you need to light a fire to cook or for warmth, you can use your lighter to start it.

Lighters are also great items to have in a survival kit because you can purchase them virtually anywhere, and there are a ton of different options. For example, you can purchase a typical BIC lighter you would find in any smoker’s home or you could even go all out and purchase a high-tech lighter designed for survival.

#7 Survival Knife

If you only purchase one thing on this list, it should be a knife. Knives are argumentatively the most important item you should have in your survival kit. If you ever need to cut something, such as food or fabric, you will need a knife.

Knives can also be used as a self defense weapon because they’re sharp, intimidating, and can cause more damage than it seems.

#8 Signal Mirror

Signal mirrors are crucial to survival because they can ultimately create fires and alert people of your whereabouts. If you’re having a hard time starting a fire, simply use a signal mirror to contrast sunlight and create a flame.

On the other hand, if you see a person, helicopter, boat, or any other sign of life in the distance, you can use the same technique you would use to start a fire, to alert for help.

#9 Radio

If you happen to experience an emergency, such as a natural disaster, you’re going to want to be in the know. Of course, most natural disasters cause power outages. So, you probably won’t have any luck tuning into the news from your television or phone.

That being said, the only way you’ll be able to remain updated is through a survival radio. Survival radios are usually compact and either run on batteries or using a crank method. Regardless of the type of survival radio you purchase, you will be able to stay in the know throughout your emergency.

#10 Flashlight

Last but certainly not least, a flashlight is an extremely important item to keep in your survival kit. Like most survival kit items, flashlights can be compact, which makes them extremely easy to store and carry around. You never know when you may need light. Sure, lighters or matches can provide light. But, they won’t be able to provide a substantial amount of light like a flashlight is able to.
